LAWS THAT CAN - AND

CANNOT BE DISOBEYED

Jesus came to fulfill the Law, not abolish it, ie., to help us obey the Law. OT says, contrary to popular belief, to turn the other cheek on occasion (i.e, David had the chance to slay Saul but did not) [eye for eye was an advance on the notion that one should burn down a whole village when one person was wronged], but only the power of Jesus in our hearts enables us to do this.

Some laws we can disobey; others we cannot. We can disobey the laws about driving certain speeds in our cars. We cannot disobey the law of gravity; we can only foolishly try to conflict with the law of gravity by driving too fast or over a cliff!

Freedom is the power to obey the laws of God that he gave us the capacity to disobey, and the power and good sense to overcome our natural sinful desires to disobey those laws we cannot disobey without the penalty of death. Freedom is the power to enjoy the benefits of those laws of God which we cannot truly break but only fight against.

LAWS WITHIN LAWS: eg, honor your mother and fathers is a breakable law. The final consequence of sin is death: unbreakable law. Not honoring your mother and father leads to a shortened life.
