JOHN WESLEY

John Wesley

Wesley, the founder of "Methodism", did not want to start a new denomination, but wanted merely to bring to power and life the Church of England, keeping the traditions of the past founded upon scripture and to reach the workers, poor, prisoners and all into the saving power and grace of Jesus Christ, ministering to all their needs, spiritual as well as work issues, medical, educational, etc. His preaching and life exemplified the putting to practice what Jesus commended us to do in Matthew 25: 31-46: we are commended to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the prisoners, minister to strangers, the lack of which will consign us to hell. Is Jesus preaching "salvation by works"? Of course not. We cannot earn our way to heaven by these deeds. But we can earn our way into hell by not doing them! For an excellent discussion of Wesley's ability to reach out to other Christian denominations and even other religons in a truly Christ-like manner. Here a number of his works free to view: CCEL
